An old craft that’s made a comeback

First responder families came out to learn how to make a macrame hanging basket.

Macramé is the art of tying knots to create beautifully patterned textiles. Many believe that the word macramé comes from the Arabic word ‘migramah’, which translates to ‘fringe.’

In our workshop, first responder families created a simple hanging basket using 4mm rope and a wooden ring. The main knot in this design is a square knot. They were thrilled to complete their hanging baskets within the two-hour session.

The beauty of macramé, participants discovered, is how straightforward it can be to create something so beautiful and versatile out of one simple knot.
