On a cold Thursday evening, Bega Valley first responders were treated to a delicious menu of woodfired pizzas served with a side of friendly inter-agency rivalry.
After weeks spent juggling rosters and training commitments, teams from NSW Fire and Rescue, SES, RFS, and NSW Ambulance arrived at Pambula’s Longstocking Brewery to battle it out in a game of wits – to try and prove themselves to be the Bega Valley’s smartest first responders.
It may have been a chilly evening outside, but there was enough competition heating up indoors to keep everyone warm and toasty.
The cheeky crew from Merimbula NSW Fire & Rescue queried Quiz Master Bree as to whether several biology questions had tipped the competition towards the team from Merimbula NSW Ambulance, “an unfair advantage,” they claimed.
One look at the leader board and their gripe was dismissed.
Eden SES turned out in force, with their “Tangerine Dream Team” taking out the title of the “Bega Valley’s Smartest First Responders”.
But in reality, everyone was the winner on the night, with first responders given the chance to get to know their work mates better and meet members of other local agencies in a social setting.
“It can be hard to get everyone from the station together to socialise outside of work. Trivia was awesome and everyone’s keen to come to the next one. It’d be a good thing for a Christmas party too,” one trivia junkie said.
Given the interest, local Fortem Community Engagement Coordinator, Jacqueline Smith is planning to go big next time round.
“Once COVID restrictions are completely relaxed, there’ll be room for up to one hundred first responders to come along, which could get really competitive and pretty rowdy!” Jacq says.
“The RFS have a direct line to Santa, don’t they? They might be able to convince him to swing by our trivia night on the back of a truck with a lolly sack. Sounds like the perfect first responder Christmas party.”
