Recently Fortem Australia hosted our first monthly Stand Up Paddle Boarding morning in the Illawarra region, with first responder families coming along to enjoy the morning on the lake. It was an opportunity to meet new people and hang out with friends, learning some new skills, being active and also a chance to be mindful as our participants focused on the task at hand and the took in the beauty of their surrounds.
The weather was just magic! The water was calm, no wind and the sky was blue – not too hot. The morning started at 9am, with Bec from Shellharbour SUP giving our participants an initial lesson on the land before heading onto the water. Bec showed the group different paddling techniques, how to kneel and stand on the boards and where to place their feet.
Once we were on the water, the participants were shown different strength exercises they could do on the board including some yoga moves and a pivot turn, which everyone did their best to try. It was such an enjoyable hour the group didn’t want it to end! Luckily for our participants, this will become a casual monthly catch-up with the next Illawarra region SUP session on Thursday 8 April 2021.
Everyone was so thankful for the experience and were so happy to connect with other emergency service members.
“Today’s paddle was fantastic. The run down at the beginning was packed with advice and useful information.”
