In April Fortem Australia hosted the second session of monthly Stand Up Paddle Boarding in the Illawarra region, with first responder families coming along to enjoy an amazing morning on the lake. It was an opportunity to catch up with new friends made during the first session, as well as meet some new people. Plus the group learnt more SUP skills, got to be active and just enjoy being in nature! Alison reports on the wellbeing activity:
“In this activity we covered four of the five wellbeing pillars, connect, keep learning, be mindful and be active. We were so lucky with the weather, it was just beautiful! The water was calm, no wind and sky was blue. The morning started at 9am with about an hour paddle and concluded around 10am.
Bec from Shellharbour SUP gave us an initial lesson on the land before heading onto the water. Bec showed us different paddling techniques, how to knell and stand on the boards and where to place our feet.
Once we were on the water, we paddled along the lake and under the bridge, navigating between the pylons of the bridge, and trying not to fall into the water!
Once we got to the other side of the bridge, we decided to go for a swim as the water looked very inviting, but also, we were starting to get quite warm from paddling against the current.
Thanks Bec for an amazing morning on the water. Our next casual monthly catch-up will be on Thursday 6 May 2021. Everyone was so thankful for the experience and to reconnect with people they meet on the first SUP.”
“Awesome as always”
