It’s a long way to the top! Centenary Trail Walking Group March | Canberra Region Activity Wrap Up

The Centenary Trail Walking Group met on a Saturday morning recently to tackle another section of the trail on the northern side of Canberra. An enthusiastic group of 10 took on the challenge this time, to walk up and around Mount Majura. The 12km trail involved some very steep and rocky sections, and it was such a great sense of achievement to reach the summit together.

The fog lifted as the walkers were about halfway up, so some fantastic views were on display. At the top, everyone was grateful to be able to stop to rest, refuel and reflect… on whether it is good luck for a lady bug to poo on you!

Clare, our Fortem team member who led the walk, was so impressed watching the group help each other down a particularly steep rocky section on the way back down. A favourite moment for her, and for the group it was a great chance for connection and experiencing the benefits of helping others.

Afterwards the participants popped over to The Knox in Watson for a well deserved coffee and toastie. This trail was quite physically challenging and the group did so well!

Besides getting outside and being active, a benefit of this wellbeing activity is the chance for real connection. The same friendly participants attend this activity every month because it is an environment in which everyone feels positive, safe and comfortable with each other. This is also reflected in the welcoming nature of the group towards the one new participant who attended.

The chance to be mindful was welcomed, with lots of reflections on the stillness of nature during the walk, and how it feels like you’re not in the city at all. Getting away from the everyday hustle and having a chance to take stock of how you are doing is so important in building your mental fitness and boosting your wellbeing.

The next Canberra Centenary Trail Walking Group activity is on Saturday 10th April. New walkers always welcome.
