First Responder & Teens Adventure Weekend | Gippsland

Being a teenager can be tough. Being a first responder is also tough, and balancing your role as a first responder and parenting of a teenager can be even tougher. We have brought together an amazing weekend for our first responders to bond with your teenagers through fun and challenging activities in a beautiful setting. It will include a full day of outcome-based activities – developing resilience and confidence; and a half day of fun adventure.

This is a great way to strengthen family / kinship group bonds, as well as to broaden your social network through connection with other first responder families. Connection is an important part of the path to mental fitness, and can take a protective role in maintaining wellbeing through increased feelings of happiness, security, belonging and self-worth. Being active helps to build resilience and wellbeing, and plays a major role in maintaining mental fitness. It helps us to cope with stress, gives us more energy and confidence, as well as improving mood and quality of sleep. Challenging our minds with new skills, approaches, and information can improve our knowledge and thinking skills, increasing confidence, sense of purpose, and ability to cope with stress. Being in the present moment is a great way to gain perspective, increase resilience, and reduces stress. Presence of mind (‘mindfulness’) has a range of benefits in building mental fitness including greater self-awareness, increased adaptability, and better recognising how and when to seek help. Acts of kindness as well as self-care techniques help us build connections with others, as well as increasing confidence and the ability to cope with challenges. Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness for us as well as the people we help.

Details:

Arrive on Friday night, any time from 5pm to settle into the cabins before dinner. Departure time between 1.30and 2pm on Sunday, after lunch. All meals are provided. It is important that participants commit to the whole weekend. Numbers are limited and a waiting list will be kept in case of late cancellations. Accommodation will be cabin style. Note: NO BEDDING IS PROVIDED. Please ensure that ALL guests arrive with adequate bedding, pillow and sleeping bag OR blankets/sheets and a pillow.

This activity is free for first responder families (find out who we serve here). Adults and teens (minimum age 13) only. Fortem is currently monitoring COVID guidelines closely and may reschedule this event and notify participants accordingly.
