Resources to help first responders and the wider community deal with COVID-19 and storm pressures

We live in extraordinary times and together we face those challenges. The Victorian community is feeling that weight at the moment.

In the last 12 to 18 months that feeling of stress we all feel is likely to have changed and feels different – especially now as the COVID-19 pandemic takes another turn and Victoria deals with wild weather.

The current stress being experienced by the wider community is acutely felt by our first responders and their families. They see it in the people they are called to help, and they feel it in themselves.

The ongoing nature of COVID-19 builds on the stresses of having worked through an extended period of drought, recent bushfires, storms and floods. Not to forget day to day emergencies.

Although known for resilience, first responders are at risk of suffering mental health issues because of the pandemic, both now and in the longer term, due to the range of challenges it presents.

Early research suggests high levels of depression, anxiety, insomnia and psychological distress among frontline healthcare workers, indicating the need for workers and their organisations to make their health a priority – now.

Fortem Australia offers a range of free, easy to use, practical online resources designed to help first responders and their families build mental fitness, however they are tools that the wider community would also benefit from at this time.

Please share this with family and friends who you think might benefit – and don’t forget to include yourself in that thinking.
