WHY CALL FORTEM PSYCHOLOGY SUPPORT?
Our psychologists are highly experienced in the challenges and traumas that first responders and their families go through. We can help you find ways to feel well again.
We’re independent, so we’re not part of any workplaces or first responder organisations.
And we’re here to support families, as well as first responders.
It’s a good chance to be heard and understood, and to discover ways to get through tough times and difficult feelings.
WHO CAN ACCESS FORTEM PSYCHOLOGY SUPPORT?
Fortem Psychology Support is available to first responders who were involved in the Black Summer bushfires, and their immediate family members. You can find out more about the first responder families that we support here: Who We Support.
Family members are welcome to access support without the first responder.
You can attend a Fortem Psychology Support session by yourself, as a couple or as a family.
WHEN IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO CALL FOR SUPPORT?
Fortem’s psychologists are available to support you through the challenges you’re experiencing. There are lots of reasons you might choose to get in touch with us, including:
- You haven’t been feeling like yourself lately, or the people around you have commented that you don’t seem like your usual self
- You haven’t been sleeping well
- You feel like things are hopeless, or you’ve had thoughts of harming yourself or others
- You’re irritable or angry, or finding it hard to concentrate
- You’re feeling unsafe or triggered by something around you
- You’ve going through something stressful, like the fire season, relationship or financial stress, losing someone you love, or figuring out life in a pandemic
They’re some examples of when you might need support, but you know yourself better than anyone – so if you think it’s time, then it’s time.
Everyone needs support sometimes, so reach out. The earlier you get support, the better you can bounce back.
This is not a crisis support service or a helpline. If you need urgent help, please phone 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
HOW DO YOU BOOK A PSYCHOLOGY SUPPORT SESSION?
Call Fortem during business hours, and our friendly team will book in a time that suits you.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN A PSYCHOLOGY SUPPORT SESSION?
A Fortem Psychology Support session is a chance for you to talk and find ways to be well.
The psychologist will help you find ways through the tough times, difficult thoughts or feelings that you’re experiencing. This might include finding strategies that fit your needs and goals.
WHAT IF YOU NEED ANOTHER SESSION?
Your psychologist will work with you for multiple sessions if you both agree that this is needed.
WHAT IF A FORTEM PSYCHOLOGIST ISN’T BASED NEAR YOU?
When you call, let us know where you’re located. If we don’t have someone near you, we can book you a telehealth support session.
WHAT IS TELEHEALTH?
Telehealth is when you meet with a psychologist through a video chat. If you’re not sure about using a video chat, we can provide support over the phone.
It means that, wherever you are, you can chat to an expert about the things you’re finding challenging at the moment.
When you book in for telehealth support, we’ll send you an email with a link. We send this through Microsoft Teams, but you don’t need to download the program.
On the day of your session, find a quiet, private place so you can talk openly. Then, simply click the link to get into your session.
Telehealth is not a crisis support service or a helpline. If you need urgent help, please phone 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
DO YOU NEED A REFERRAL?
You don’t need a referral to Fortem Psychology Support. Simply call us to book in a session.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Fortem Psychology Support is 100% funded for eligible first responder families who had involvement in the Black Summer bushfires, so it doesn’t cost you anything.
