The Power of Gratitude

With less than two weeks to go until Thank a First Responder Day on Wednesday 12 June, Fortem Australia is encouraging communities across the country to recognise the power of a simple “thank you” — and the impact it can have on the wellbeing of those who serve.

First responders work in high-pressure environments that often expose them to trauma, stress, and burnout. While their roles are vital to community safety, the emotional toll of the job can be significant — not only for first responders themselves but also for their families.

Fortem’s evidence-based wellbeing programs show that gratitude not only boosts morale but can help counterbalance the toll of repeated exposure to trauma. It creates moments of connection, enhances team cohesion, and fosters a sense of community — all of which are critical to long-term wellbeing.

“Gratitude is more than a feel-good moment — it’s a protective factor for wellbeing,” Fortem CEO Michael Willing APM said. “When first responders hear genuine thanks from their communities, it boosts morale, reinforces their purpose, and reminds them that they’re not alone.”

Scientific research and lived experience both show that gratitude enhances resilience, strengthens social bonds, and improves emotional regulation. In team environments, it helps build trust and cohesion — both essential in high-stakes, high-stress workplaces.

As Thank a First Responder Day approaches, Fortem is encouraging Australians to take part in any way they can: write a thank you card, host a morning tea, share a message of support on social media, or simply take a moment to say “thank you” in person.

These small acts of kindness matter, they create a ripple effect that can make a real difference in someone’s day — and sometimes, their life.
