Matt Lamberth joined Fortem as an ambassador earlier this year, helping to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and wellbeing for first responders and their families, and the support services that are available.
As a police officer who spent the final years of his career on long-term sick leave, Matt understands the unique challenges that can come with working as a first responder. Over a 28-year career in both federal and state policing, he worked in general duties, crime scene, intelligence, counter terrorism investigations, and training, however a critical incident several years ago had a significant impact that resulted in post-traumatic stress disorder.
‘Now I’m looking after me and doing things I love,’ Matt says.
He is also playing a critical role in reducing stigma about mental health and encouraging people to seek support when they need it. And he is passionate about looking after his own wellbeing through physical activity, rest and mindfulness.
‘Apart from good sleep, I like keeping active and engaged, for example through gym and fitness or golf, although that can set me back a bit at times,’ he says, adding that camping and activities like building Lego are also great.
Travel is also high on the list, with Matt recently traveling to the Swiss Alps with his wife to hike around Mont Blanc.
‘Doing something difficult but being able to enjoy the scenery, mountains and achieving ‘something’ out of the ordinary!’
It sounds like Matt is working hard to ensure he takes the advice he would give to his 15-year-old self: ‘Try everything you can and don’t say no to opportunities when they arise.
They’ll shape you.’ Thanks for sharing, Matt, it’s wonderful to have you on the Fortem team.
