Fortem Ambassador Garry Sims APM shares the power of photography for wellbeing

Fortem Ambassador Garry Sims APM is sharing a deeply personal wellbeing practice with first responders and their families through his delivery of interactive photography workshops.

With more than 40 years of service as a police officer, Garry understands firsthand the cumulative pressures that come with a career in emergency services. For him, photography has become a proactive and powerful way to support his mental health and overall wellbeing, and one he is passionate about passing on to others.

Garry explains that photography has a natural way of slowing the mind. Lifting a camera, whether a professional digital model or a mobile phone, encourages people to pause, observe and focus on the present moment. Searching for light, movement or the right moment to capture creates a gentle sense of mindfulness, helping to quiet the mental noise that often follows a demanding shift.

‘Beyond mindfulness, photography strengthens your observation and your sense of gratitude,’ said Garry. ‘It teaches you to notice the small things you might otherwise overlook – the way early light hits a fence, the texture of old timber, or the quiet dignity of a steam locomotive at rest. That simple habit of noticing builds an appreciation that extends well beyond the camera and into everyday life.’

Photography has also given Garry a way to express emotion without words. Images can hold feelings that are difficult to articulate, offering an outlet for processing experiences through visual storytelling. Whether it’s a moody landscape, a warm portrait or a nostalgic detail, each image becomes a form of expression and reflection.

Importantly, Garry has found photography creates opportunities for connection outside of the workplace. Group shoots and workshops encourage conversation, shared experiences and a sense of belonging, something many first responders and their families deeply value.

These benefits align closely with Fortem’s mission to support the mental health and wellbeing of first responders and their loved ones. Through Fortem’s free photography workshops, participants are invited to connect, build creativity, improve mindfulness and engage in meaningful conversation in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Garry says he is proud to offer these opportunities as part of his role as a Fortem Ambassador and looks forward to welcoming participants to upcoming workshops.
