Fortem Ambassador Garry Sims APM shares the power of photography for wellbeing
Nearly twelve months ago, Jodie Mlikota stepped into the role of Community Engagement Coordinator for Fortem in South Australia and hasn’t stopped moving since.
Jodie describes her first year as ‘really exciting,’ and you can tell she means it. Jodie was tasked with introducing Fortem to first responders across SA and describes it as a privilege to have met some amazing people along the way.With momentum building, she’s looking forward to continuing to grow Fortem’s presence across the state.
Before joining Fortem, Jodie spent years working in a similar space, supporting Defence personnel and their families. ‘Being part of a Defence family, I have seen firsthand how much difference meaningful support can make’ she says. That experience shaped her career and continues to guide how she engages with the first responder community today.
So, what does a Fortem Community Engagement Coordinator do? In Jodie’s world, no two days look the same. One minute she’s organising wellbeing and connection activities for first responders; the next she’s visiting different agencies, building relationships, and raising awareness of the support Fortem provides. It’s a role built on people, and it suits her perfectly.
Outside of Fortem, Jodie’s ‘happy place’ involves endorphins, a gym, and sometimes a microphone. She’s also a fitness instructor, so when she’s not at work, she’s likely teaching a class or squeezing in a workout of her own. Her go-to mantra? ‘You are only one workout away from a good mood!’
Life at home is just as full. Jodie loves being outdoors, especially walking with friends, ideally on the beach! Her dog Joey gets plenty of these walks too, especially between coffee catch-ups and kids’ sport. With two teenagers keeping her on her toes, weekends are often spent on the sidelines cheering them on.
Travel is another big part of Jodie’s world. ‘I love to travel and have been fortunate to do so quite a lot.’ Her next ideal travel destination would be returning to Croatia, her husband’s family heritage, ‘I would love to go back with my kids to share more of the culture and heritage with them’ she explains.
Jodie is one of those people who brings such a positive energy to those around her, Fortem is so lucky to have her on the team!
