Since joining Fortem Australia as a volunteer in 2024, Heidi has been helping create welcoming and meaningful experiences for first responders and their families in South Australia.
Based in Adelaide, Heidi supports Fortem’s social connection and wellbeing activities, lending a hand wherever she can, from setting up events and welcoming participants to sharing information about the support and services available through Fortem.
For Heidi, volunteering is a way to give back to the first responder community and show her appreciation for the important work they do.
‘I was interested in joining Fortem to show my appreciation for our first responders and their families,’ she says.
When Heidi first expressed an interest in volunteering, Fortem didn’t yet have a permanent staff member based in South Australia. Since then, she’s been pleased to see Fortem’s presence grow in the region, creating more opportunities for first responders and their families to connect.
‘I’m so glad the team developed their presence in the region,’ she says.
Outside of volunteering, Heidi has a passion for adventure, particularly anything involving the outdoors or animals.
Trail running is one of her favourite activities, but it’s not the only way she likes to get moving. Heidi also enjoys motorsports, with both her and her partner regularly taking part in driving events.
‘Both my partner and I drive in various events with the goal of racing door-to-door one day,’ she says.
Her partner has also been one of the biggest influences in her life, someone she credits with helping turn challenges into possibilities.
‘He makes the impossible possible,’ Heidi says.
And when she’s not out on the trails or behind the wheel, Heidi has been exploring something completely different, learning Auslan, Australian Sign Language.
‘I love the expressiveness of it,’ she says.
Whether she’s trying something new, enjoying the outdoors or helping others feel welcome at a Fortem activity, Heidi brings a wonderful sense of enthusiasm and community spirit to everything she does.
Thanks for sharing, Heidi, and for generously giving your time to support first responders and their families. We’re so fortunate to have you as part of the Fortem team!
