Whether on the coast, in rivers, on beaches or during floods, first responders across Australia work tirelessly to keep communities safe on the water.
Today is Day 2 of Fortem Australia’s 10 Days of Gratitude, recognising the first responders and volunteers who patrol, rescue and respond on our waterways.
From marine rescue volunteers and water police to surf lifesavers and SES crews responding during flood emergencies, these teams provide critical support in unpredictable and dangerous environments.
Their work often takes place in challenging conditions, requiring skill, teamwork and calm decision-making under pressure.
Today we thank the people who dedicate their time to protecting Australians on and around the water.
Whether responding to dangerous surf conditions, conducting rescues during severe weather events or assisting communities impacted by floods, these first responders provide an essential service that helps save lives and strengthen communities across Australia.
We also acknowledge the families behind these first responders, whose support helps make this important work possible.
In unpredictable conditions and difficult environments, these first responders continue showing up to protect and support others. Today, Australians are encouraged to turn gratitude into action by thanking the first responders and volunteers who help keep people safe on and around the water.
