First responders connect at Fortem’s inaugural wellbeing retreat

A group of NSW South Coast first responders recently came together at Mystery Bay Cottages for Fortem Australia’s first-ever wellbeing retreat.

Guided by the Five Ways to Wellbeing, the three-day program encouraged participants to step away from their busy routines and immerse themselves in activities that fostered connection, mindfulness, creativity, and learning.

The retreat offered a diverse mix of experiences, from painting Picasso-inspired self-portraits and building mandalas to joining an interactive workshop on protective factors for first responder mental health. One participant reflected, “I knew I would enjoy it, but I underestimated the amazing and powerful depth of the activities and engagement with everyone. I needed it more than I realised.”

There were also moments of calm and reflection, including coastal bushwalks along the “Humpback Highway” where pods of whales were spotted, casual fireside conversations under the stars, and a gentle breathwork class. Lighter moments came courtesy of a trivia night hosted by the ever-popular “Trivia Newton John,” which was so well-received it demanded an encore performance.

‘I didn’t realise just how much I needed some downtime until then! It was great to catch up, relax, and recharge with everyone. Really appreciate all the laughs and good company’ said one participant.

The supportive environment helped participants feel at ease throughout the weekend, as one described: “The environment and activities made all of us feel comfortable, involved, and engaged and very importantly, safe.”

Fortem would like to acknowledge the generosity and support that made the retreat possible, including the hospitality of Mystery Bay Cottages and Laurence Babington, the delicious BBQ dinner provided by Marine Rescue Narooma, the expertise of Jennie Keioskie from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program and Glenn Cotter from The Healthy Communities Foundation Australia, who helped ensure a safe and supportive environment.

By combining connection, creativity, and reflection in a natural setting, Fortem’s wellbeing retreat offered first responders the opportunity to pause, recharge, and build resilience – reminding participants of the importance of caring for themselves as they continue to care for their communities.
