Fortem Australia

Fortem provides specialised wellbeing and mental fitness support to first responder families.

We are a national not-for-profit organisation using research and best practice to support the health and wellbeing of the people who work, or have worked, in national security and emergency responder roles. This means supporting their families, too.

First responder work demands courage – but those who answer do not choose the situations to which they are called, nor the effects that these can have on their wellbeing. Courage to address the deep impacts of this work, and the effects that it has on health, families, and colleagues – is a choice.

There is courage in choosing to acknowledge the reality: higher rates of psychological distress, trauma, and suicidal ideation than the general adult population. There is courage in choosing to tackle this: prioritising wellbeing, trying new things, talking about challenges, and making new connections. At Fortem, brave is a choice – not an obligation – and we help first responders and their families to choose wellbeing.
