Dr Richard Magtengaard is a Consultant Psychiatrist with almost 25 years of clinical and administrative experience, originating from working within the Public Mental Health arenas, later moving on to establish a broad set of interests within the Private Practice and Not-for-profit setting.

Richard served for 10 years as a Commissioned Officer (Bridge/Harbour Watchkeeping and Navigation) within the Royal Australian Navy, before retiring to complete his Postgraduate Degree in Medicine (MBBS).

Richard is currently the Director of the Military Trauma Recovery Programme across 2 busy sites of care, namely Bethesda Clinic (a 75-bed Tier 1 DVA Accredited private hospital in Cockburn, Perth) and ANZAC House Veteran Central (an interdisciplinary setting for specialist care within the CBD of Perth).

This programme remains dedicated to assisting Defence Personnel, our Veterans, First Responder Organisations, and their families who have sustained physical and psychological traumas during the performance of their duties.

Richard values his role as Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee at Bethesda Clinic and as a member of Open Arms’ National Advisory Committee, and St John Ambulance Expert Advisory Group. He remains an active member of the Australasian Military Medical Association (AMMA) and has developed lasting affiliations with ADF Joint Health Command (JHC), Returned Services League WA (RSLWA), ANZAC House Veteran Central, St John Ambulance (SJA), West Australian Police (WAPOL), Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and numerous other Ex-Service Organisations (ESOs) and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs).

Richard is passionate about the future of disruptive health technologies to improve outcomes in care, including neurostimulation with TMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation). He is a Foundation member of Oqea and is helping the leadership team to refine this innovative, cloud-based digital platform to improve the well-being of ADF personnel, Veterans and First Responders, and their families.
