Garry Sims APM

Garry Sims joined the New South Wales Police Force in 1975. After attesting at the Redfern Academy, he commenced General Duties policing at Burwood where he progressed to Criminal Investigation Duties with a transfer to No 21 Division.

Garry Sims joined the New South Wales Police Force in 1975. After attesting at the Redfern Academy, he commenced General Duties policing at Burwood where he progressed to Criminal Investigation Duties with a transfer to No 21 Division. From there, he moved to CI Duties at Blacktown in Sydney’s west before continuing his career as a Detective in Bathurst, a regional town west of Sydney. After serving five years in the country, Garry returned to the city as a Detective Senior Constable at the Fraud Squad, CIB.

In 1988, Garry resigned from the police and followed opportunities including travelling overseas for a multinational company.  In 1998, Garry rejoined the NSW Police Force performing General Duties at Blacktown. He quickly was promoted to the rank of Sergeant performing anti-theft duties before being promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2006 at Granville where he worked for six years. Since then, he has performed the role of Duty Officer at Penrith, Hawkesbury and his current Command in the Blue Mountains where he now holds the rank of Detective Chief Inspector.

Garry’s service has seen him recognised by receiving the National Medal (2nd Clasp), the National Emergency Medal, the National Policing Medal, and in the 2015 Queens Birthday Honours List, the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service. He is also the receipient of the NSW Police Medal (5th Clasp).

In addition to his policing duties, Garry is an active member of the Blue Mountains Community and performs the role of Community Ambassador for R U OK?, the well-known Australian suicide intervention charity.

Garry lives in Katoomba with his wife and has the distinction of working alongside his daughter Emily who is a Senior Constable in General Duties, also attached to the Blue Mountains Command.

Coming from a policing family, Garry has a strong commitment to the wellbeing of emergency service workers and supports the work being done by Fortem Australia.
