Kurt is a dedicated individual who has committed over 14 years of his life to serving in the Western Australia Police Force. During his tenure, he bore witness to the immense challenges faced by first responders, particularly in relation to the effects and profound impact of cumulative Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS). This firsthand experience left an indelible mark on Kurt that fuelled his decision to join Fortem Australia as an ambassador to aid first responders grappling with the burdens of PTS and mental well-being. Fortem Australia’s mission aligns seamlessly with his own, working tirelessly to enhance the well-being of first responders so that they can better serve themselves, their families, and their community for longer.
Having witnessed the relentless toll of cumulative PTS on even the most resilient individuals, Kurt was compelled to act. His time in the police force exposed him to the grim reality of what prolonged exposure to trauma can do to the human psyche. This firsthand experience ignited a passion to equip fellow first responders with the essential tools to ’empty their bucket’ of accumulated stress and trauma. Recognising the urgent need for support and awareness surrounding these issues, Kurt founded Hold the Line Australia which he hopes to utilise to spark open and candid conversations about PTS, mental health, and mental illness within that community. Kurt understands that these individuals, often perceived as the strongest in our community, can suffer silently if they lack the necessary tools and resources to cope with the emotional burdens they carry.
Kurt’s purpose is to utilise his role within Hold the Line Australia and as a Fortem Australia ambassador to act as a catalyst for dialogue and shedding light on the often-overlooked challenges faced by first responders. Through innovative programs and resources, he aims to empower individuals to acknowledge their struggles, seek help, and most importantly, foster a supportive network where they can share their experiences without fear of judgment.
Among Kurt’s notable accomplishments is receiving a Commissioner’s Special Commendation for Bravery. This recognition came after a remarkable act of heroism where he rescued an unconscious male from a smoke and flame-filled garage, providing emergency first aid until St. John Ambulance arrived, saving the male’s life. Additionally, Kurt received a Commissioner’s Commendation for Meritorious Service, underscoring his remarkable initiative, professionalism, and unwavering commitment. His contributions were instrumental in the successful resolution of Taskforce Rodia, a critical investigation involving the abduction and subsequent return of Cleo Smith to her family. This highlights Kurt’s exceptional dedication to his community and serves as a testament to his selflessness dedication to the well-being of others.
Throughout his journey in the WA Police Force, his compassionate response to the plight of first responders, and his active involvement with Fortem Australia and Hold the Line Australia, he has become a formidable advocate for the mental health of those who have dedicated their lives to serving and protecting others. His story is one of resilience, empathy, perseverance, and a deep commitment to positive change in the lives of those who need it most.
