Aftermath: Rebuilding strength, restoring hope

Supporting emergency services workers and their families post-disaster or critical event.

This guide is designed as a practical resource for first responders and their families to navigate the complex emotional, physical, and psychological challenges that often follow a disaster. While training equips you for the immediate response, the aftermath can bring experiences that are less predictable and deeply personal.

Our goal is to help you:

  • understand what happens after a disaster, why reactions vary and why they are normal
  • recognise common responses, so you can identify what’s typical and what might require
    extra care
  • know when and how to seek support including professional help and community resources
  • apply practical strategies for recovery and self-care to restore balance, maintain resilience,
and protect your wellbeing over time.

There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to feel after a disaster. Every experience is unique, and recovery is not linear.

By using the tools and information provided here, you can better support yourself, your colleagues, and your loved ones as you move forward.
