Moral injury is the deep distress that can happen when something you see, do, cannot stop, or have done to you goes against what you believe is right. For first responders, this can happen in high-pressure situations where decisions have to be made quickly, resources are stretched, systems fall short, or there is no option that feels right.

Moral injury is not only about fear. It is about values, conscience, trust, identity and meaning.

Moral injury can be difficult to recognise, understand and talk about. This webinar and accompanying resource are designed to help.

Watch the one-hour recording of Moral injury: Understanding the invisible wounds of service to better understand what moral injury is, how it can affect first responders, and how we can better recognise and respond to moral distress.

We recommend downloading the free moral injury resource to use alongside the webinar. It provides key information from the session in an easy-to-reference format that you can keep, revisit and share with others.

These resources are available to anyone who may benefit – including first responders, family members, colleagues, peer supporters, leaders, clinicians and service providers.

Please share this page with your teams, colleagues and networks. The more people who understand moral injury, the better equipped we are to recognise it and support those who may be experiencing it.

Allow approximately 60 minutes to watch the webinar.

This resource has been developed from Fortem Australia’s moral injury webinar and reflects Fortem’s clinical understanding of first responder experiences. It is not a diagnostic tool, but it may help you recognise moral distress early, understand why it can feel so heavy, and know when it might be time to reach out for support.
