When responding to disasters you may experience varying levels of distress or discomfort.

Using the Subjective Unit of Distress scale can assist in developing a level of understanding of and language for how distressed you are, and according to this level of distress what skills and strategies are appropriate to apply to reduce the distress.

This scale represents the intensity of your feelings and internal experiences such as anxiety, anger, stress, fear or discomfort, and ranges from a 0 (cool calm, and collected) to a 10 (extreme distress, unable to function).

This can be a helpful guide communication for yourself, your family or even colleagues during disaster periods, as it can indicate how you are travelling and what supports you may need or how much support is needed and how available your resources are for other needs/issues to be addressed.
