Fortem Co-Founder and Managing Director John Bale has been named a finalist in the prestigious Australian Mental Health Prize for 2021.
The Prize, now in its sixth year and established by UNSW Medicine & Health’s School of Psychiatry, recognises Australians who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of mental health or the prevention and treatment of mental illness.
This year, six finalists have been selected.
John Bale’s nomination is recognition of the work Fortem does to deliver mental health literacy, awareness, prevention and treatment.
“People don’t look at mental health the same way they do physical health. With physical health we try to keep ourselves relatively fit. We do that because we know if we don’t, we have a higher risk of injury and once we’re injured it takes longer to recover. The exact same thing is true when it comes to mental health.
“We need to change the conversation, so that it’s not just stories of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, anxiety, and mental health breakdowns.
“I think there’s a real opportunity here for us as a community to do better and to really talk about mental health holistically.”
We wish all the participants well, and look forward to the prize announcement on 17 November.
